SUSSEX TOP 8: HOLLINGBURY MASSIVE!

June 10th, 2010  |  Published in News

At the recent Top 8 for Sussex top players, held at 6 village Sport centre, Westergate, there was a sizeable Hollingbury presence, consisting of old and new faces. We had players participating in a range of categories and made an impression. In the Cadet & Junior Girls Emma Sheen made her debut.

Hollingbury Tues session 004

In the Cadet Event She qualified for her group and lost to the eventual winner Holly (11 – 9 in the 5th). In the Junior Girls she did not qualify but she made progress by beating a girl she had lost to in the Cadet Girls group. Carl Haines had a tough cadet boys group He did not qualify but he did beat the eventual Winner (Tejas).

Hollingbury Tues session 011

In the Junior Boys group he had a tough group. . As before he did not qualify but he did manage to beat the eventual finalist Mark Scutts. Mark Scutts took part in the Junior Boys event & Senior Men’s event.

Scuttsy

In the Men’s event he had a tough group. Though he did get a win over Matt Porter, he did not qualify but found the experience invaluable. The Men’s event was won by Peter Bartram (Hollingbury Player) in a titanic battle against Mayur Majithia. (Hollingbury Player). Mark had a hard route to the Final of the Junior Boys final. He had to face up & coming players like Jack Bennett but lost to Carl Haines in the group. In the final he met the in-form player Helshan Weeraasinghe. They’ve had close games before and so this proved to be. In the end Helshan prevailed. Daniel Barna should be mentioned as he has made appearances at Hollingbury Sessions and he got to the final of the cadet boys event, losing to Tejas (a player Carl beat). Hollingbury’s James Meyers enters at No 81 in the world!!

April 26th, 2010  |  Published in News

The latest confirmed men’s World Deaf rankings are now out and for the first time ever show 3 GB players in the top 100 in the world. The GB No 1 player Andrew Calloway is now No 47 up from No 103 an excellent achievement as we have never had a player inside the top 50 before. Nicholas Gilmour who is still a junior has leapt in at No 64 from no International ranking previously, and James Meyers who is also still a junior is now in at No 81 from no previous International ranking.

James No 81

(James far left)

Alireza Kamrani-Masooleh and Martin Strutt are now also ranked at equal 102. George Buck and Bella Hegedus at equal No 111, and Andrew Cooper at 122. The new up rated rankings are based on the player’s performances in the Deaflympics held in Taiwan in September 2010. The achievement of the 2 juniors is particularly good as they are in the World Men’s ranking as there is no world Junior ranking category. The next world ranking tournament is in Poland in May 2011 and all the GB squad players will be competing for places in the four man team.
